The Bold Type – Season 5, Episode 5: “Don’t Turn Away”

Well, we are officially one episode away from the final episode of The Bold Type. Though I am really sad that one of my favorite shows is ending, I cannot wait to see how everything wraps up next Wednesday. I was so pleased with this episode, specifically because I’ve been a bit disappointed with this season. Maybe it’s just me, but if I was a show-runner who had one season (of only six episodes) to wrap up my show, you better believe that every episode would be a banger. The cast and crew of The Bold Type were told that they’d only have six episodes for their final season before filming began, so I was expecting each one to be jampacked. Unfortunately, I’ve felt like this season has been slow (which would be fine if it was a twenty-two-episode long season, but it’s not). Do you know when a show has super long seasons and towards the middle, they have a few episodes where nothing really happens? Like episodes where if you missed them you wouldn’t be lost? My family and I call those “filler episodes” and I hate to say it, but that’s what I think the last three episodes of TBT have been. That is why I am SO happy to report that this week’s episode was so good. I feel like they’re finally taking the fact that this is the final season seriously, and while I could be annoyed that they’re doing so at literally the last moment possible, I’m going to choose to be grateful instead.

A Bit About The Bold Type:

If you aren’t familiar with The Bold Type, feel free to check out the post I did about season 5, episode, 2. In the post I introduce the show and cover a few of the main storylines from this season.

A Bit About Season 5, Episode 5: “Don’t Turn Away”:

Let me breakdown this episode by what’s going on in the life of each of the three main characters:

Jane: Jane is thriving as the interim editor-in-chief of Scarlet magazine. Jacqueline, the current editor-in-chief, is going on vacation and has been training Jane to take her place while she is gone. In this episode Jane is really settling into the role and truly kicking ass.

Sutton: With her recent separation from her husband, Richard, Sutton has really been struggling this season. In this episode she starts therapy because she notices that she’s been drinking too much and wants to get ahead of the problem. Sutton also met up with Richard (who we have not seen all season) to sign the divorce papers. Sutton’s storyline has been very intense this season, but it has been so good. I love that The Bold Type never shies away from tackling harder topics like mental health and works to normalize things like therapy. Bravo!

Kat: Kat is also thriving career-wise. She and her ex-girlfriend, Adena, have been working on turning a movement they created “Don’t Turn Away” into a whole magazine. In the episode, Kat pitched her ideas to Jacqueline, and ends up getting an offer to make “Don’t Turn Away” a vertical in Scarlet magazine.

My Favorite Scene:

At the end of this episode, Jacqueline comes to Jane’s office and tells her that she wants Jane to permanently take over as editor-in-chief of Scarlet magazine. I really don’t know what came over me, but I was completely bawling during this scene. I’m thinking that my overly emotional response was due to one of these three reasons:

1. I was feeling very sorry for myself because I am only a few years younger than Jane and in no way close to where she is in life.

*reminds self that this is fiction*

2. This has been Jane’s dream/what she’s worked toward since season one, and I’m just so happy for her and proud.

3. I’m on my period.

Mostly likely a mix of all three, but either way, I was a blubbering mess watching this scene, so I feel like that makes it my favorite.

Best Music Moment:

During this episode, Sutton and Richard finally have a face-to-face interaction. They get to talk, and even though they end up signing the divorce papers, Richard tells Sutton he misses her and that he will always love her. UGH. Anyway, during that sweet/heartbreaking moment, the song “Somebody” by Dagny played. I immediately downloaded the song after the episode and have been playing it non-stop.

I’m so excited to see how the show ends. My sister and some of our friends are having a little party next week to watch the series finale together. Yes, were those people who throw TV themed parties.
