The Bold Type – Season 5, Episode 2: The Crossover

A bit about The Bold Type:

The Bold Type is a drama/comedy television series on Freeform. The show follows the lives of three best friends, Jane (Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee), and Sutton (Meghann Fahy) in their mid-twenties who work together at a magazine in New York City called Scarlet. Scarlet, the fictional magazine in the show, is inspired by Cosmopolitan magazine. The Bold Type has been described as Sex and the city meets The Devil Wears Prada, and that is a pretty perfect description.

A bit about “The Crossover”:

This episode centered around Katie Stevens’s character, Jane. Jane is a writer at Scarlet and has her own vertical called “The Failing Feminist”. In the last few episodes, Jane and her team had been working on a story about abuse in the workplace. During this episode, Jane realizes that the story (which she had already published) had inconsistencies due to a mistake that she made.

My Favorite Scene:

As a result of Jane’s error, she had to retract the article. This disaster could not have happened at a worse time because Jane was scheduled to present her vertical at an ad sales conference. This was my favorite scene of the episode because during her presentation, Jane takes full responsibility for her mistake. She delivers her speech like a total boss and kills the presentation. One thing I love about The Bold Type is that it covers relevant issues and there are usually life lessons tucked into episodes. This scene felt like one of those moments and I loved it.

Episode Fun Fact:

Sadly, this season of The Bod Type, (season five) will be the last. I know, truly tragic. However, because the cast and crew knew this was their final season, they made sure to go out with a bang and have fun. Something fun that they did was have Katie Stevens’s (Jane) real life brother on the show. Katie’s brother, Ryan Stevens, was in episodes one and two of this season playing the character “Joey Faulk”.

Best Music Moment:

Before I explain my favorite music moment of the episode, you need a little bit of backstory:

At the end of last season, Sutton and her husband Richard separated because Richard wants to have kids and Sutton doesn’t. Since that realization, Richard’s character has been living in California. However, in this episode, Richard came back to New York for business and asked Sutton if she would meet him at their apartment so they could talk. Sutton was so excited because she thought he wanted to work things out.

Okay, now that you’re caught up, here is the music moment:

When Sutton arrived at the apartment, Richard was gone. Instead, he had his friend meet Sutton to tell her that Richard wants a divorce. Yes, you read that right. He sent someone else to tell his wife that he wants to divorce her. Despicable. Anyway, while Richard’s friend and Sutton had this truly upsetting/heartbreaking interaction, the song “Chasing a Felling” by LÉON was playing and it was definitely a “pause to look up what song is playing” moment. I have had this song on repeat ALL weekend. It is a little sad (hence the scene it played during), but I love a good sad song. The Bold Type is so good at playing the perfect song for dramatic moments, and this one did not disappoint.
