A Bit About Insecure:
Did anyone else get a subscription to almost every streaming service under the sun during quarantine? I am currently the proud owner of a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and my current favorite: HBO Max.
If you have HBO Max, you NEED to watch Insecure. If you don’t have it, I HIGHLY recommend you take the plunge. Insecure is a half hour comedy that follows best friends Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) as they navigate relationships, careers, and their own friendship. My sister and I started watching Insecure a couple weeks ago, and it has quickly become one of our favorite shows. It is hilarious, raw, real, has great music, and an amazing cast.
A Bit About “Hella Perspective”:
This episode depicts a month in the life of three main characters on the show—Issa, Molly, and Lawrence (Issa’s ex-boyfriend played by Jay Ellis). Lawrence’s chapter covers his relationship with new girlfriend, Aparna. He and Aparna seem strong at first, but their relationship ultimately ends when Lawrence realizes he is still hung up on Issa.
In Molly’s chapter, she is focusing on bettering her life. She is looking for a new job after feeling under appreciated in her current position, is back in therapy, and exploring a new relationship.
The final chapter of the episode depicts a month in Issa’s life, and she’s struggling a bit. Things between her and her closest friends are a bit weird, and she has to move due to the rent in her apartment complex rising. However, the hardest thing Issa is going through is her relationship with Lawrence. Last season she and Lawrence broke up after five years together. Their split was caused by Issa cheating, and she has been shattered ever since. Issa is still very much in love with him and is full of regret.
My Favorite Scene:
The end of Issa’s chapter ends with her and Lawrence having a very long overdue heart-to-heart. When Lawrence stops by Issa’s apartment to pick up some of his things before Issa moves, she is finally given the opportunity to apologize to him. After a whole season with zero Issa/Lawrence scenes (tragic) this was such a treat. The scene was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. Though the couple do not get back together, they finally reconcile, and that’s all I need (for now).
Fun Fact:
Though I am only on season two, Insecure has four seasons currently streaming on HBO. A few months ago it was announced that the show will be coming back for a fifth and final season. Though I feel like this show could go on for five more years, I’m excited to catch up and see how it all ends. Because I’m a crazy fangirl who follows all of the cast in social media, I saw that they just finished filming their final season last week. Head over to the cast member’s Instagram pages for a behind-the-scenes look at their emotional last days of filming.
Best Music Moment:
The finale montage of the episode to the song “Biking” by Frank Ocean, is hands down the best music moment. This episode was the final episode of season two. And after a season jam-packed with drama, this ending felt light and hopeful. The song was a great choice as it adds to the upbeat vibe. I cannot wait to start season three!
